Let me tell you something, mamas: life gets messy. Between the endless laundry cycles, refereeing squabbles over Legos, and the constant chorus of “Mom, Mom, Mom!”, it’s easy to forget about ourselves. We prioritize everyone else’s dreams, aspirations, and happiness, leaving our own tucked away in a dusty corner collecting cobwebs.
But here’s the thing: we shouldn’t. Actually, we can’t. Just because we’re juggling life as supermoms shouldn’t mean we have to surrender our passions. And let me tell you about someone who embodies that spirit perfectly: Luis’s amazing mom, a woman I affectionately call “Grandmama”.
Grandmama’s Story
Now, at first glance, you wouldn’t think Grandmama is living a life fueled by passion. Semi-retired, she spends her days baking the most incredible mini muffins for her grandkids (my boys are huge beneficiaries!), tending to her garden and various plants, and keeping up with her ever-expanding brood. But step into her home craft studio, and a different side unfolds. Walls adorned with her granddaughters’ artworks and a mix of vials, drawers and jars all filled with gemstones create a magical haven. This is where she transforms those materials into stunning, whimsical jewelry – unique pieces that hold the quiet spark of her soul.
For years, Grandmama made jewelry purely for pleasure and of course for the most beautiful gifts for her friends and family. But recently, something shifted. A local artisan spotted her work, and the positive response ignited a long-dormant flame. The more people have seen her work, the more they were drawn to the intricate designs, the playful mix of textures, and the obvious joy woven into each piece. It was a love letter to her creativity, and the town responded with open arms.
The New Adventure
As is anything you start putting out into the universe, the more Grandmama spoke of her passion for jewelry, showed her masterpieces, and opened up about her dreams, the more people wanted to get involved. Quickly she was offered table space at an artisan market held quarterly by a nearby vintage store and space at a local art gallery. But more impactful than these opportunities is the endless amount of love and support she’s been given by the people closest to her. From her sister, to her son and I, to her community, and everyone in between, she has an entire cheering squad that’s got her back, no matter what she needs.
Suddenly, Grandmama, a woman in her seventies, is faced with a new adventure: turning her passion into a small business. The excitement in her eyes when she told me, and her infectious energy, reminded me of my own journey out of corporate America and into the world of consulting… and this very blog. While she knows it won’t be easy, and there will be moments of doubt and fears of failure, one thing I do know is that when she hears the familiar nagging voice whispering, “Isn’t it too late?”, I will always, LOUDLY, tell her no! And, I have no doubt Grandmama will face these challenges with her signature sparkle and infectious enthusiasm.
Lessons Learned
So, what’s the lesson in this, mamas? Here are a few gems I’ve gleaned from Grandmama’ newest journey:
- Your passion has no age limit. Don’t let society’s arbitrary timelines dictate your dreams. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a complete newbie, the fire of passion never truly dies. It might slumber for a while, but with a little nudge, it can reignite and illuminate your life in unexpected ways.
- It’s never too late to start. Starting a business, taking a painting class, writing that novel – all these dreams seem daunting, especially when responsibilities pile up. But remember, even small steps forward are progress. Start with baby steps, carve out time, and don’t be afraid to seek help and learn new things.
- Embrace the challenges. Turning your passion into reality is rarely a smooth ride. There will be hurdles, doubts, and moments of feeling overwhelmed. But remember, growth happens outside your comfort zone. Embrace the challenges, learn from them, and celebrate your resilience.
- Find your community. Surrounding yourself with supportive people who believe in you and your dreams is invaluable. Seek out like-minded individuals, join online forums, and don’t hesitate to ask for help and advice. Remember, we’re stronger together.
- Most importantly, have fun! Don’t lose sight of the joy that fueled your passion in the first place. Let the process be an adventure, celebrate your victories, and remember, even if your business doesn’t become a million-dollar empire, the personal fulfillment and growth you gain are priceless.
